992/126J - RARE HANDCRAFTS MANUAL WINDING Pocket watch with back in miniature painting on enamel. This unique piece in yellow gold pays tribute to a painting by Claude Joseph Vernet entitled “The Abundant Spring” (1766), one of the scenes of ports and seashores that made this French artist famous. To depict all the detail of the landscape and figures and the quality of the light, the artist used the exacting technique of Grand Feu miniature painting on enamel finished with flux, or transparent enamel, according to the Geneva method. Working on a base layer of white enamel, he built up his picture dot by dot using 19 enamel colors made of finely ground metallic oxides mixed with rare oils. This delicate procedure required 37 firings at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 830°C. The dial in white enamel over yellow gold presents yellow-gold applied Breguet numerals and yellow-gold hands. A green sapphire cabochon (0.37 ct) decorates the crown. This pocket watch is accompanied by a yellow-gold handcrafted stand on an oval-shaped base in British Columbia jade. It houses the caliber 17’’’ LEP PS manually wound movement with small seconds.
